I’ll keep this short and brief…
Instead of trying to change society through strategic partnerships, one line bible verses on beer and light conversations on heavy topics, try this:
Love your neighbour.
…in private. With no cameras and no fanfare. Just simple acts of love gifted toward the individuals and families in your midst.
Christian religious institutions, please understand that being the centre of the world is no longer your mojo. The methods of engagement utilised with success from last century need to be left there. Many people don’t really care what Christians think anymore, especially in the public square.
Instead, allow your “point” to be made in the private of conversations with the people you do life with, and by the actions you show toward them.
The Bible Society Coopers Relationship Teaches Us Something Important
Don’t worry about trying to convince people of your point of view – that’s never worked, especially in our modern world.
Don’t try to be hip and cool and push your views into the public sphere. If invited, then sure, speak up. Otherwise transform the world through the secrecy of your actions.
Sure, the outcry over a couple blokes having a conversation about an important moral issue by some inner city publicans is ridiculous, but seriously, was anything else expected?
Our society is completely immature when it comes to these issues. And for Christians to continually try and influence the culture through publicity stunts and corporate partnerships, completely misses the point of mission in the 21st century.
So instead of fancy slogans about ‘keeping it light‘, maybe a more biblical approach would be to simply ‘shine your light‘ and let the moral police look after themselves.
Love your neighbour and deny yourself.
It’s the only thing that’s ever changed the world.
